How to Stay Cool

Going out on a hot day can be a challenge and— if you're not careful— dangerous. It's important not to underestimate the effects heat can have on your body. We've got some tips on how to stay cool and safe in the heat!

1. Plan your day

Before going out, plan ahead to determine the things you need to do and the places you need to go. Try to arrange your day so you spend as little time outside as possible and plan to have everything completed before 10 am to avoid the peak hot hours. If early hours don't work for you, you can plan to do things after 8 pm as well. Avoid going out between 12 pm and 4 pm whenever possible. 

2. Dress appropriately

What you wear can have a huge effect on your experience with heat. It's important to wear lightweight, breathable fabrics during the summer to stay cool. 3. Stay hydrated

The most important thing you can do before, during, and after going out in the heat is to stay hydrated. Avoid soda and other sugary drinks and stick to drinking pure water. You can also cool you body by choosing to eat "cool" foods. Foods with high water content, like salads, or low starch and sugar like frozen yogurt and popsicles, help cool your body from the inside out.

4. Pace yourself

As you go out make sure to set aside time to rest from the heat in the shade or air-conditioned area. Do not push yourself— exertion only increases your body temperature and makes you hotter. Instead, take things at a calm and leisurely pace.
